My name is Autumn, and I’m so pleased to join the BLI community this summer, under the guidance of Jim Dixon, as your teaching assistant. This past school year I had the pleasure of working with Jim at Sharon High School, where we both taught biology. When Jim presented me with the opportunity to work alongside him at BLI, I could not think of a better way to spend my summer. I can’t wait to get started, as I’m sure these next few months are sure to be exciting, as we will explore and grow together as scientists. I look forward to learning all about you, but first, here are a few things about myself.
Home for me is the small town of Brunswick, Maine. I grew up in a big family, with four brothers and two sisters, making me one of seven! When I’m not spending time with my family I enjoy traveling, visiting art museums, and finding ways to get crafty. Before starting my teaching career at Sharon High School, I attended Emmanuel College, where I double majored in biology and secondary education. While attending Emmanuel, I was given the opportunity to intern at a vet technology company back home in Maine called Idexx Labs. As an intern at Idexx in the Hematology Research and Development department, I assisted in the development of a new hematology instrument. Additionally, I conducted an individual summer research project that involved verification testing for a potential product. In summary, I got the opportunity to learn from many bright scientists, and was familiarized with some pretty amazing technology. Upon graduating from Emmanuel, I began my job search, and was lucky enough to begin my teaching career at Sharon High School. This past year was wonderfully successful, however this upcoming year I will be leaving SHS to begin grad school in NYC at Columbia’s Teachers College. While attending grad school, I'll also working at a middle school in Harlem as an associate science teacher (exciting stuff!).
That's all for now! Again, I look forward meeting you all soon!
